#UnapologeticallySpeakingMyTruth - 'Speaking our truth is part of self-care' by Elly @unapologeticallyelly

It's #WorldMentalHealthDay peeps. And I'm gonna start by saying that you can speak truthfully about your mental health today, and every damn day.

For most of my life, I went out of my way to hide, suppress, ignore and dismiss my truth in order to "fit in" with a profoundly sick society, and this was so harmful.

I broke down, physically and mentally, and was subsequently diagnosed with a highly stigmatised mental illness; Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).

I've spent the last 4 years in a mental health crisis, and 2018 is the year I made it out of that crisis and into a less unstable place. This is the first time in years that I've been able to take a deep breath without feeling like I'm going to burst into tears or into a self-harm episode.

I look back trying to work out how I reached crisis point; "at what point could I have helped myself?!" and one thing that was a constant was trauma, abuse, and my need to make others comfortable by silencing myself. Silencing myself meant I didn't ask for and accept help sooner. With early intervention, I believe things wouldn't have got so bad.

I silenced myself and dismissed my truth for most of my life, and it wasn't until I broke down and was forced to face it that I realised how powerful speaking my truth is. We shouldn't feel that who we are and what we are going through is so wrong that we have to silence ourselves or apologise for it ~ it's kinda like saying sorry for just being and for taking up space.

If you can relate, know that it's ok to not be ok, and it's ok to speak your truth. Actually, it's self-care to do so, and it's a necessity, and it can be the beginning of a powerful healing journey.
